All women have right to choose abortion, Supreme Court

Amaravati: The Supreme Court has given a sensational verdict that all women have the right to choose abortion. The Supreme Court held that a woman’s marital status cannot take away her right to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. A bench led by Justice DY Chandrachud ruled that under the provisions of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971, single and unmarried women have the right to have an abortion. According to the MTP Act, abortion is allowed up to 24 weeks, and a woman who has been subjected to marital rape also has the right to an abortion. The court also mentioned ‘marital rape’ on this occasion. She said that if a husband forcibly has sex with a married woman, even if she becomes pregnant, it can be treated as marital rape and an abortion can be performed. The Supreme Court said that there is a need to protect women from forced pregnancy.
